Welcome Back!
Students focus on decoding and encoding words in a multisensory approach to reading and spelling words that encompass each of the six syllable types in the English language. Instruction is individualized and each student is able to progress at his/her own pace. Skills are taught in a sequential and cumulative fashion. Repetition and review are weaved into daily lessons. Mastery at each step is essential before a student can progress to the next "step" in the program. The ultimate goal is that each student will become a fluent and automatic reader.
Fluency Tips for Parents:
Paired Reading is one effective strategy that parents can easily implement at home. Choose a text that you can read aloud with your child. Then follow these steps:
1. Read the text to your child as he/she follows along. Model fluent reading by pointing out phrasing, pacing and expresson.
2. Read the material three or four times with your child.
3. Have your child read the material independently.
Always ask open-ended questions about the reading to check for understanding and connections to the text.
This strategy only takes about fifteen minutes a day and it can greatly improve your child's ability to read fluently.

Reading aloud to your child enhances their reading fluency because:
1. You are a great model of a fluent reader!
2. Reading aloud increases your child's vocabulary and comprehension skills!
